Founded in 1987, Seattle Arts & Lectures (SAL) is a nonprofit literary organization devoted to exploring ideas and the imagination through language. SAL provides adults and children in the Puget Sound region with dynamic programs that celebrate reading, writing, and the discussion of literature, culture, and the humanities. These programs include the annual Lecture Series, six lectures by internationally renowned writers and artists; the Special Event Series, lectures by renowned thinkers and doers; Writers in the Schools, an award-winning reading and writing program in public middle and high schools; Wednesday University, a continuing education program in the arts and humanities; the Poetry Series, readings by distinguished poets; and Teachers as Scholars, a professional development program for K-12 teachers.
